Article Excerpt:
click to embiggen The city of Eugene has never seen anything like the invasion of die-hard visiting college football fans that hit it in late October of 1982. That status is gone forever – scholarship limits, parity, admission standards and a couple of decades of bad coaching can rip the heart out of any dynasty – but in the early 80s, Notre Dame was still living on its status as one of the “Old Gang of Nine,” the schools that had dominated college football since the end of World War II.
